AC/DC
TRF Superferodyne receiver |
|
With black bakelite cabinet and
white knobs. Three valves (+ rectifier), French scale.
In green: medium wave stations, in red: long wave
stations. In Great Britain this radio was released in
March 1936; the radio pictured above was made in
Belgium. The radio operates on 110 and 250 volts AC or DC. |
|
To overcome
import restrictions on the continent, Ekco set up a
small-scale manufacturing and distribution site in
Belgium:
S.A. Ekco Radio, Avenue de Schaerbeek, Haren (near
Brussels), as import duty
was levied by weight. The company initially used
components shipped over from Southend but gradually
began to use locally sourced components. |
|
This
manufacturing unit, however, was short lived due to an
economic downturn in Belgium. In 1937 it was shut down
with the exception of a sales and service department in
Brussels, which continued up to the start of WW2.

Continental tubes EF5, EF6, CL4 and
CY1, heater circuit ballast and capacitors were used in this
set. In the English version the tubes VP13C, SP13C,
Pen36C and UR1C were used. The dial lamp was also
changed in the Belgian model. The English model has a
large 200V lamp; in the continental version a much
smaller lamp in series with the filament circuit of the
EF5 detector tube was used. |
