Tesla is the successor of one of the first electro technical enterprises in the former Czechoslovakia. It was founded exclusively with Czech capital under the name Elektra on January 18th, 1921. From 1932 to 1945 it was part of the Philips holding. The production program ranged from light bulbs, electron tubes, radio receivers, military technology to radio and television transmitters. After the war, a process of nationalisation was started in communist Czechoslovakia. The company conducted its commercial activities under the name Tesla since March 7th, 1946. The popular radio "Talisman", originally made by Telegrafia, was marketed by Tesla from then on.

Until 1989 Tesla had a state monopoly on manufacturing electronic products. After the fall of communism in 1989 it became difficult to compete with other national and foreign companies. Only a few parts of the company survived.
